Urgent care fellowships

The middle path
Urgent care is the delivery of ambulatory care outside of an emergency department on an urgent of unscheduled basis. These are a good medium in between the routine primary care visits and the emergent acute care visits to the ED.

These centers specialize in treating illness that is severe enough to now wait till the next clinic visit but not as severe that they would need a trip to the ER and subsequent admission.Urgent care is a popular line of business for doctors who are from pediatrics, internal medicine or family medicine. There is no steady doctor patient relationship as the patient present with an acute problem which is taken care of and chronic health issues and health maintainence is left for the primary care provider.

Beginnings of a fellowship
In 2006, the Urgent Care Association of America sponsored the first fellowship training program in urgent care medicine. Physicians in the urgent care fellowship program receive training in the many disciplines including adult and pediatric acute issues, wound and injury evaluation and treatment, occupational medicine, urgent care procedures, and business aspects of the urgent care center.
